BOSTON – The Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence applauds the Massachusetts Senate for taking quick action to pass S.2572, An act to sensibly address firearm violence through effective reform. This is a critical next step in moving gun violence prevention forward, making the Commonwealth safer for us all.
This bill takes a variety of approaches to prevent gun violence including addressing the issue of ghost guns, improving crime gun data reporting and analysis, prohibiting the possession of “Glock switches” or other devices that make semi-automatic firearms more deadly, examining funding structures for community violence intervention programs, and many other important provisions.
We are grateful to Senate leadership, including Senate President Spilka and Majority Leader Creem for their commitment to preventing gun violence. Just one month into 2024, we have already seen the impact gun violence has across Massachusetts. Every instance of gun violence leaves families, neighbors, and entire communities dealing with lifelong trauma and grief. This bill is an important step forward in creating a world free from gun violence, and we thank every Senator who voted in favor of this legislation.
