Springfield, Ma – U.S. Navy Veteran and lifelong resident Ed Collins has announced his candidacy to the open seat representing Springfield City Council Ward 5.  The election will be this summer on Tuesday August 16,2022. The general election for Ward 5 City Council will be on Tuesday September 13,2022.

Ed Collins is a lifelong resident of Springfield and a homeowner in Ward 5 for 50 years.  

ED is graduate of the former Springfield Technical High School and of Springfield Technical Community College. After high school, Ed served in the U S Navy as a Machinist Mate abord the aircraft Carrier USS America (CVA 66). 

Following his service in the Navy Ed returned to his home town of Springfield and went to work at the former Western Mass Electric Co. ED met and married his wife Paula, purchased a house in sixteen acres here in Springfield and a few months after their son Dan was born.  

Ed retired as a representative of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, where he served as an International Representative. 

Over the years Ed has have volunteered in community service in a variety of ways including as a board member of Child & Family Service; Pioneer Valley United Way; Goodwill Industries; The Regional Employment Board; Westfield State University Board of Trustees and the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees (where He served as Vice Chair).  

On the City Council, Ed will work on improving the conditions of our neighborhood’s roads, improve snow plowing for our neighborhood, and work to improve access to mental health in our city. 

Ed States: “ My service on the City Council will not be a stepping stone to higher office, but rather the capstone on a long career of service and leadership”
