In a wide-ranging interview on The Last Page w/ D. Moss, renowned business strategist, entrepreneur, author, and clarity coach J. Richard Byrd shared his proven approach to solving complex problems in business, leadership, and life. Known as the strategist that other experts call, Byrd pulled back the curtain on what it truly takes to build scalable businesses, lead with vision, and create generational impact.
“I started my first company in seventh grade. I’m 53 now. This is all I know,” said Byrd, who currently leads The ByrdOlogy Group, Inc., a strategy and business development firm working with CEOs, creatives, faith leaders, and mission-driven entrepreneurs across the country. He is the author of two influential books, ByrdOlogy and his newest release, BEology.
At the core of Byrd’s method is a simple but powerful idea: every great business begins with identifying a problem. “If you can find the pain or pressure a customer is feeling and provide a clear, effective solution, you can create a business around it,” Byrd explained. “People don’t pay for pleasure—they pay to stop the pain.”

This approach has guided Byrd’s work in industries ranging from entertainment and technology to nonprofit management and ministry consulting. A former executive in entertainment law, Byrd’s diverse experience allows him to pivot seamlessly from structuring hotel financing deals to launching social impact ventures and coaching high-performing executives.
“The knowledge is the product,” he said. “If I can see the friction, I can fix it. If I can find the gap, I can build the bridge.”
His clients include high-net-worth individuals, pastors, entertainers, and business owners who need help navigating growth, crisis, or reinvention. Byrd is often brought in when an organization needs strategic clarity, operational systems, or high-level decision-making support.
When asked about his versatility, Byrd credited his production background and his passion for structure. “Everything is project management. Whether you’re producing a show or building a business, it’s all about timing, systems, and outcomes.”

His newest book, BEology, focuses on the inner work that precedes outer success. “We’ve mastered being human doers. But now we must learn to be human beings,” he said. “This book is about alignment, purpose, and learning to pause long enough to reflect on who you really are—and what you’re building.”
ByrdOlogy, his earlier book, is a practical guide to leadership, entrepreneurship, and creative problem-solving based on decades of firsthand experience.
Byrd also shared insights into how leaders can overcome mental blocks, especially when vision outpaces execution. “Most of the time, people are overwhelmed. They don’t lack vision, they lack process,” he explained. His go-to tools include whiteboarding, AI integration, and the Getting Things Done (GTD) method: Do it, delegate it, or delete it.
In a world where everyone is hustling for attention, Byrd stands firm on one principle: results. “I don’t train hobbyists. I train officers. I work with decision-makers who are ready to take action.”
His advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, creators, and changemakers is direct: “Do it imperfect. Break it fast. Fail faster. Someone with less talent is already succeeding because they started.”
He also encourages founders to be mission-minded and legacy-focused. “We’re not here to just build companies. We’re here to build communities, libraries, and institutions that will outlive us. That’s legacy.”
As the conversation closed, Byrd shared a final insight for anyone seeking purpose and direction. “Clarity starts with two questions: What is your why? And what does winning look like for you? If I can help you define those, everything else becomes possible.”
