State Senator Adam Gomez Announces Opioid Recovery Grant Awards for Springfield

State Senator Adam Gomez (D-Springfield) joined the Healey-Driscoll Administration today in announcing grants worth nearly $275k being awarded in the Springfield area to combat the opioid epidemic, with Choice Recovery Coaching and the Black Behavioral Health Network set to receive $222,500 and $50,000 respectively to help the organizations deepen their impact, scale their work, and build a strong and sustainable infrastructure to meet the needs of populations in historically underserved communities.

SPRINGFIELD, MA – On Monday, December 26, 2022, between the hours of 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm, the Boys & Girls Club Family Center will host one of the largest Citywide Kwanzaa Celebrations in the city of Springfield. The annual event organized by the Afro Cultural Arts & Humanities will take place in the gymnasium located at 100 Acorn Street, Springfield, MA.

The Kwanzaa Celebration is free and open to the public. 

The Boys & Girls Club Family Center is proud to continue working closely with the Afro Cultural Arts & Humanities to host its Annual Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration in the city of Springfield. “Kwanzaa is a celebration of African American Culture which runs between December 26th through January 1st,” Keshawn Dodds, the Executive Director stated.“

This is a great way for our community to learn, and understand the importance of the principles of Kwanzaa, as well as supporting our community of black business owners. There will also be live performances and lectures for the listening audience. This event has grown to see well over 500 people come through to celebrate together.”

This year’s celebration will feature African, Caribbean, and African American storytelling & readings, African Dance and Drumming, Spoken Word Poetry, Musical Selections, Workshops [Mental Health and the Black Family / Walking the Talk – A training on Morals and Values / The Black Community & Politics / and Holistic Maternal Health], LIVE Podcast Recordings, Community Updates, Guest Speakers, Art, Vendors, and Keynote Address.

“The theme of this year’s Kwanzaa Celebration is remembering yesterday and building for tomorrow,” organizer Darryl Moss states. “It is important that we gather in remembrance of those who sacrificed much and worked tirelessly to create a foundation to help our community forge forward, so we remember yesterday. It is equally important that we assemble to create a template of empowerment to build a stronger community for those who come behind us. Kwanzaa gives us a blueprint in terms of effectively using the Nguzu Saba principles as both marker and benchmark to build, strengthen, and sustain our efforts.” 

The Annual Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration will take place on Monday, December 26, 2022, between the hours of 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm. At the Boys & Girls Club Family Center, located at 100 Acorn Street, Springfield, MA 01109.

This event is free and open to the public.
