Springfield, Mass (June 11, 2022) — Lifelong Springfield resident Ellen Moorhouse announces the launch of her campaign for Ward 5 City Council in the first special election held by the City of Springfield this summer. The preliminary election to replace out-going Ward 5 Councilor Marcus Williams will be held on August 16, with the general election slated for Tuesday, September 13, 2022.
Born and raised in Springfield, Ellen purchased her first home in Ward 5, investing long-term in the community she now seeks to represent. Her mother is a paraprofessional for Springfield Public Schools and her father is a small-business owner for more than 30 years here in the City of Springfield.
As a former Senior Program Officer with the Springfield Department of Housing, and current licensed real estate salesperson, Ellen has a deep understanding of the housing challenges and opportunities within the city and is well qualified to work collaboratively with residents and city officials alike to bring solutions.
“Residents deserve a fresh voice that will fight for them. My policy experience on the local, state, and national level makes me uniquely qualified to bring innovative solutions to issues facing Ward 5 residents and the City of Springfield as a whole. I look forward to speaking further with the residents and voters of Ward 5 to hear directly from them on the needs of our community–and then going out there to get the job done. Together, we can make a lasting difference for all of Springfield starting right here in our own backyard,” said Moorhouse.
Ellen has a long history of civic activism in the City of Springfield and has dedicated her career to public service as a former Springfield Rotarian, former member of the League of Women Voters, and former member of the Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way of Pioneer Valley. Ellen also served as a commissioner in the inaugural Hampden County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls (HCCSWG), a regional body charged with proposing policies that would improve access to opportunities for women and girls in Massachusetts. She is a current member of the newly formed Springfield Women’s Commission, working as a community liaison from the city council to share critical resources and information with women, children, and families across the city, and is a lifelong Girl Scout.
Moorhouse is the first candidate to file with OCPF to officially launch her campaign to represent Ward 5 as the next City Councilor. As a candidate, Moorhouse intends to prioritize high-quality economic development, launch initiatives to decrease blight and fill empty storefronts, work with residents to reduce area crime and litter, and offer more recreational space by expanding opportunities for young people to not just live in Springfield and Ward 5, but to thrive.
She earned a BA in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts, and an Honors International Relations Certificate from the Five Colleges. In 2020, she received her Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration on executive leadership management from Our Lady of the Elms College, and was inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta honors society.
